Glam up a retro look with a side of sexy for a pin-up style this week.
This week, we celebrate the glamorous pin-up culture in Australia. Started in the 1940's, Pin-Up fashion takes its style from a mix of rockabilly, old Hollywood and burlesque glamour.
Showing a little bit of skin to tease without going overboard. Pin-up style conveys a total look of neatly classic yet elegant from clothing & accessories to hair and makeup. Pin-up is not just for the skinny, in fact, the pin-up culture celebrates women's natural curves and color.
Pin-up images are meant for display or "pinned-up" on a wall. These are drawings, paintings or pictures from magazines and postcards. In the mid-20th century, pin-up posters were mass produced and became very popular.
The most popular early pin-up girls were Betty Grable, Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe.
In the popular culture, pin-up style promotes positive body images and the love for one's sexuality. Overall, it encourages self-awareness and self expression of confident Australian women.
These trends complete the perfect pin-up look.
The Makeup
Liquid, cream-base foundation and a compact powder that matched their natural skin tone.
Eyebrows are kept full and the eyeliner takes the wing effect in the 1950s.
Lipstick is applied in matte color and vibrant red. The lips were outlined for roundness and overdrawn to look plumper.
The Hair
The pin curl is a hairstyle trend. It is distinctive with voluminous, soft curl, brushed off the face and pinned into place usually on the top of the head.
More hairspray, huge barrel curling iron to create fuller bangs, victory rolls and more. You can also add hats, headbands and bandanas for a more intact and flawless hairstyle.
The Clothing
Pin-up clothing embraces both bright and colorful sexy retro style and a glamourous vintage-inspired outfit.
Usually sailor cut & sweetheart neckline, bustiers, halter tops, button-down and tube tops. The dresses are made fuller with a petticoat inside. Swing dresses have cherry prints, polka dots, stripes, checkered or animal prints.
Trousers, skinny jeans, skirts and shorts are high-waisted to emphasize their hips and curves.
The Shoes
Most photographed styles are shoes with 2-4 inch heels, wedges and platform pumps with straps. Most common colors are red and black like what we have in our Bettie Page collection. Also trending in the pin-up culture are shoes with polka dots, cherry prints, lace and animal prints.
